Moving Tips

From our team to yours -- practical advice to make your next move smoother, faster, and less stressful.

1

Start Planning Early

  • Book your moving company at least 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (summer months).
  • Create a moving checklist and timeline -- start 6-8 weeks before your move date.
  • Notify your utility companies, bank, and USPS of your new address at least 2 weeks ahead.
  • Research your new neighborhood: schools, grocery stores, hospitals, and local services.
2

Packing Like a Pro

  • Start packing non-essential items first -- seasonal decor, books, and extra linens.
  • Label every box on the top AND sides with the room it belongs in and a brief contents list.
  • Use color-coded tape per room to make unloading faster and easier.
  • Pack heavier items (books, dishes) in small boxes; lighter items (linens, pillows) in large boxes.
  • Wrap fragile items individually in packing paper or bubble wrap and mark boxes "FRAGILE."
  • Keep an "essentials" box with items you'll need the first night: toiletries, chargers, snacks, a change of clothes.

Moving Day Tips

  • Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and outdoor space before the truck leaves.
  • Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting so you can reassemble them easily.
  • Keep important documents (IDs, contracts, valuables) with you -- not in the moving truck.
  • Have cash on hand for tips if your movers do an exceptional job.
  • Make sure pathways are clear and furniture is accessible before the crew arrives.
4

Settling Into Your New Home

  • Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first -- these are the rooms you'll need most immediately.
  • Change your locks as soon as you move in for added security.
  • Test all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Locate your main water shutoff valve, electrical panel, and gas shutoff.
  • Introduce yourself to neighbors -- a friendly community makes a house feel like home.
